You will do well to train your cat to use the little box at all times, stay off the kitchen counters and come when he is called. Cats apparently love to tread daintily upon a shelf or counter top, the more breakable items involved the better. 2. Never hit or punish your cat, many people spray their cat with water to get him off the counter or stop him from scratching the furniture; this is not a good idea when it comes to training cats. It can encourage aggressive behavior and the last thing you need is a cranky aggressive cat running around the house. A better way to discourage them from getting on the counter is to use sticky tape or something of this nature as the cat does not like the feel of it on his feet.

3. A cat will soon know when it is feeding time, whether he hears the can opener or the noise of his dish being moved, he will quickly associate it with food. This is a good opportunity to teach your cat to respond to his name. Call your cat by name before making any noise he associates with feeding time, he will soon learn that the sound of his name is a possible treat and come running to you.
