Everything You Need to Know About Maine Coon Cats

Maine Coon Cat

Maine Coon Cat

The main coone cat is the second most popular (behind the Persian) pedigreed cat in the world.  They are one of the oldest natural breeds in North America, the Maine Coon is regarded as the native cat to the state of Maine.  The Maine Cat has a silky long coat designed for harsh climates and is extremely nice to touch.  Not generally “lap cats” the Maine Coon Cat enjoys being around its owner, stay relaxed and stays playful through-out their lives.

Origins

Originated in the U.S in maine.  The cat got its name from a legend stating that a wild cat mated with a raccoon, probably thought of by some because of the bushy tail and realtive colors of the Main Coon Cat.  Their popularity as show cats was low as Persian Cats dominated the scene on their arriva; however, in 1950 the Maine Coon’s popularity rose again as breeders and cat fanciers began taking notice of them and began their pedigreed status.  By 1980 all registries accepted the Maine Coone and now is the 2nd most popular cat on the planet.

Personality

A non-dependant, highly people-oriented cat, the Maine Coon cat does not pester their owner but thinks of itself as hanging out with you and helping you with whatever task you are doing.  A very clever breed, they will follow you around and sit on the chair next to you, or wait behind a closed door for you to reappear.  Maine Coon cats will be your best friend, companion, and buddy… but will never be your little baby.  Males will like to clown around while females will be a bit more laid back.  Both genders are good around children and other cats.

Maine Coon Cat Training Tips

You will want to give your Main Coon cat high quality dry food as many veteranarians and experts recommend this.  Most Maine Coons can free feed without becoming overweight.  Keep a good supply of clean water for your Maine Coon as they love water, and love a constant supply.  Maine Coon Cats can be trained to wear a leash, and many will play catch with you.  This specific breed will learn things out of habit if it is associated with something they like.

Two known health issues with Maine Coon Cats are hip dysplasia and cardiomyopathy.  Make sure you talk to your breeder about any known problems with your cats family.  Also, because this breed is so popular make sure your breeder is a reputable one and not a back yard breeder.
